Teach For America - Dallas-Fort Worth

About

Teach For America recruits outstanding and diverse leaders to become TFA corps members. Corps members commit to teaching for two years in a low-income community, where they're employed by local schools and confront both the challenges and joys of expanding opportunities for kids. We recruit outstanding and diverse leaders early in their careers and ask them to make a commitment that begins with two years of teaching in a public school, partnering with children and families most impacted by educational inequity. We seek people who have the values and experiences necessary to expand opportunity and access for children. Among the leadership traits we look for are a deep belief in the potential of every child, a strong record of achievement and perseverance in the face of challenges. Since 1990, more than 60,000 extraordinary leaders have joined TFA. They’ve brought energy and imagination into classrooms in rural and urban communities. Today, half of the corps identify as people of color and half come from low-income backgrounds. More than 1,000 corps members and alumni were themselves taught by a TFA corps member when they were students. After two years, corps members become part of the TFA alumni network. Informed and inspired by their students, many continue teaching; others pursue other leadership roles in schools and school systems or launch careers in other fields that shape educational access and opportunity.

I chose Dallas-Fort Worth because of the opportunities for growth the city offers its teachers. I am so thankful to have systems of support through Teach For America, my school and my district. Not only have my leadership skills developed in the classroom through practice and experience, but I have also had several opportunities to lead in my school—even as a second-year teacher.
