I joined Urban Teachers for its holistic approach to teacher preparation and development. Though rigorous, the residency year humbled my mind for learning, challenged my comfort zone, for growing, and affirmed my passion for serving.

Program Info

Urban Teachers was founded on the core belief that every child deserves a great teacher, every year, regardless of where they live.  Yet, students in underserved urban districts, the majority of whom are people of color, often receive the least effective and least experienced teachers available. To change this, Urban Teachers is redesigning teacher preparation to build a highly effective urban teacher workforce. We are producing a pipeline of gap-closing teachers who stay in the profession, give students the skills they need to excel, and are committed to the communities they serve.

Currently in Baltimore City, the District of Columbia, and Dallas, Urban Teachers prepares an effective corps of high-performing career teachers to improve the quality of classroom instruction in urban schools and life outcomes for young people. Because Urban Teachers holds our aspiring teachers accountable and ties certification to demonstrated instructional competency, urban students get the quality education they deserve.

Urban Teachers is also very excited to announce the Black Educators Initiative, a five-year effort to rapidly accelerate recruitment, support and retention of qualified, committed Black educators across Baltimore, DC, and Dallas. The Black Educators Initiative is designed to remove barriers inhibiting the recruitment and retention of Black educators through research-based and innovative approaches. Click here to learn more about this initiative and stay informed on further details surrounding eligibility and financial and programmatic support for Black applicants.
